Where Are Diamonds Found? Diamond Origins

Natural diamonds are found in countries like Canada, Botswana, Namibia, and Angola, to name a few. Diamonds are discovered through geological exploration and extracted from kimberlite pipes or alluvial deposits. Fewer than 30 active diamond mines operate worldwide today.

Global Diamond-Producing Regions

Natural diamonds are found in countries like Canada, Botswana, Namibia, and Angola to name a few. These countries have proven how natural diamonds, if sourced responsibly, can be an incredible resource for growth for the entire nation and local communities, with minimal environmental impact.

The diamond industry in these regions brings economic benefits by creating jobs, supporting local businesses, and funding community development projects. Diamond mining helps to fund vital social programs, improve infrastructure, and enhance education and healthcare in local communities, driving long-term sustainable growth.

As these nations continue to prioritize responsible mining practices, the wealth generated from natural diamonds is reinvested into local communities, creating positive social and economic outcomes.

How Are Diamonds Formed?

Natural diamonds are formed deep within the Earth’s mantle, typically around 90 to 120 miles beneath the surface, under intense heat and pressure. Over the course of millions to billions of years, carbon atoms bond in a crystal structure, creating the exceptional hardness and brilliance diamonds are known for. As the carbon atoms arrange themselves in a tetrahedral structure, they form the purest, most coveted gemstones—natural diamonds. Volcanic eruptions bring these diamonds to the Earth’s surface, where they can be recovered. The rarity and extreme conditions required for their formation make natural diamonds one of the most precious and enduring things found on Earth.

Traceability Innovations

Recent innovations in natural diamond traceability are transforming the way diamonds are tracked from mine to market. Advances in blockchain technology, along with partnerships between the diamond industry and third-party certification bodies, are ensuring that every diamond can be traced back to its origin with complete transparency. These traceability systems provide consumers with detailed information about the diamond’s journey, from its recovery to the retailer, verifying that it has been sourced ethically and conflict-free. As demand for responsible sourcing grows, these innovations offer an exciting glimpse into the future of the diamond industry, providing both assurance and accountability.
