Sherlock Holmes 4.0

Sherlock Holmes 4.0

The Sherlock Holmes 4.0 is a portable desktop diamond verification instrument for loose and mounted stones designed to separate natural diamonds from synthetic diamonds. The operator must install Yehuda app  and calibrate a recent model smart phone (not included) before using the device. The Sherlock Holmes 4.0 is manually operated and requires operator interpret the test results. There is no Referral category for this device, some natural diamonds may be categorized as synthetic diamonds.

In order to achieve the published ASSURE test results it was necessary to view zoomed-in images of all test stones from both the crown and pavilion. The screening performance was adversely affected when only viewing from one angle, or when only viewing the zoomed-out images. The time to do this analysis is reflected in the measured speed.

Instrument Performance

Key performance metrics measured for the Sherlock Holmes 4.0 with the ASSURE 2.0 Primary Loose Stone Sample:

Diamond False Positive Rate (optimal rate 0%): 0%
Diamond Referral Rate (optimal rate 0%): N/A
Diamond Accuracy Rate (optimal rate 100%): 97.2%

The Primary Loose Stone Sample was tested three times and consists of 350 loose diamonds, 100 loose synthetic diamonds and 50 loose diamond simulants. The stones are 0.03 ct to 0.20 ct in D-J colour.

Key performance metrics measured for the Sherlock Holmes 4.0 with the ASSURE 2.0 Smalls Loose Stone Sample:

Diamond False Positive Rate (optimal rate 0%): 0%
Diamond Referral Rate (optimal rate 0%): N/A
Diamond Accuracy Rate (optimal rate 100%): 92.6%

The Smalls Loose Stone Sample was tested three times and consists of 350 loose diamonds, 100 loose synthetic diamonds and 50 loose diamond simulants. The stones are 0.005 ct to 0.02 ct in D-J colour.

The measured test speed for the Sherlock Holmes 4.0 was 109 stones per hour.

Key performance metrics measured for the Sherlock Holmes 4.0 with the ASSURE 2.0 Primary Mounted Stone Sample:

Diamond False Positive Rate (optimal rate 0%): 0%
Diamond Referral Rate (optimal rate 0%): N/A
Diamond Accuracy Rate (optimal rate 100%): 100%

The Primary Mounted Stone Sample consists of jewelry pieces with open-back settings containing a total of 303 stones. The stones are a mix of diamonds, laboratory grown diamonds and diamond simulants in the D-J colour range and have a minimum girdle diameter of 2.0 mm.

Key performance metrics measured for the Sherlock Holmes 4.0 with the ASSURE 2.0 Smalls Mounted Stone Sample:

Diamond False Positive Rate (optimal rate 0%): 0%
Diamond Referral Rate (optimal rate 0%): N/A
Diamond Accuracy Rate (optimal rate 100%): 100%

The Smalls Mounted Stone Sample consists of jewelry pieces with closed-back settings containing a total of 54 stones. The stones are a mix of diamonds, laboratory grown diamonds and diamond simulants in the D-J colour range and have a girdle diameter between 1.0 mm and 2.0 mm.

The Sherlock Holmes Detector 4.0 requires visual interpretation of long UV fluorescence, phosphorescence and fluorescence images. In order to achieve the published ASSURE test results it was necessary to view zoomed-in images of the test stones from both the crown and pavilion. The screening performance was adversely effected when only viewing from one angle, or when only viewing the zoomed-out images. Based on the images, the operator can conclude one of the following results:
i) Diamond
ii) Synthetic Diamond

There is no Referral category for this device; some natural diamonds may be categorized as Synthetic Diamond. The operator must supply their own recent model smartphone* (<3 yrs old) with iOS or Android and installed Yehuda app.

Prior to the ASSURE testing, a selection of known natural diamonds were scanned and saved as reference images to calibrate the user’s perception of the blue colour shades corresponding to natural stones for the particular smart phone used. This requirement is detailed in the user manual provided by Yehuda at the time of  testing (14703_YEHUDA_ManualAdditions-PV_SinglePages.pdf). Please note that the reference stones are not included with the device.

Update: the calibration requirement no longer appears in the currently posted version of the manual (13619_YEHUDA_SherlockBigManual-10.pdf, January 2025). As such, the measured ASSURE results cannot be validated if the colour calibration is not performed.

* iPhone 15 with iOS 17.2 was used for ASSURE testing.
