Jewels as Art: Diana Vreeland’s Belperron Bracelet Comes to Auction at Christie’s
The private collection features editor Diana Vreeland’s iconic Suzanne Belperron bracelet alongside several notable natural diamond pieces including JAR, Cartier, and exceptional vintage.
Christie’s latest auction, Jewels as Art: Magnificent Jewels from a Private Collection, highlights a private collection that features truly exceptional jewelry one could deem wearable art. One of the most important pieces in the collection is a Belperron “Diamond Tube” bracelet which famously belonged to esteemed fashion editor, Diana Vreeland. This collection has been curated over a number of years by a collector with an evident eye for art and design. There are notable designs from Cartier, David Webb, Buccellati, Bulgari, JAR, and a vast assortment of vintage natural diamond pieces hailing from the 19th and 20th centuries.
The owner of the latest auction lot at Christie’s acquired 15 Belperron pieces over the years, three from Suzanne Belperron’s personal collection. This assemblage of Belperron jewelry is one of the most important collections to come to auction and each piece is bold and sculptural, a signature of Belperron’s body of work. Another notable Belperron piece is the ‘Facetté’ Cuff Bracelet which combines the use of natural diamonds with semi-precious materials like silver and rock crystal to create a bold, geometric style.
In a press release, Claibourne Poindexter, Christie’s Senior Jewelry Specialist notes, “Christie’s is honored to steward this remarkable collection, exemplifying the art of jewelry collecting through the discerning eye of an American collector who just views jewels as a true form of art.” He adds, “This collection spans iconic designs across centuries. Christie’s is proud to offer collectors the chance to acquire these emblematic pieces.”
In addition to the incredible Belperron collection, the curator also owned seven impressive pieces from JAR, a renowned designer who excels in jewels as wearable art, including a pair of JAR Colored Diamond and Diamond ‘Hedgehog’ earrings. The collection also features a 19-century rose-cut Antique Diamond Rivière Necklace, an exquisite Antique Diamond Bracelet, a Georges Fouquet Art Deco Multi-Gem and Enamel Bangle, as well as a Cartier Art Deco Diamond and Coral bracelet watch.
The live auction for this collection will be happening on December 10, 2024 at Christie’s in Rockefeller Center.
